Known among enthusiasts as the “Ferrarina” or little Ferrari, because its chassis and mechanics were actually produced by Ferrari, the ASA 1000 was the top model of a small Milan manufacturer, whose story has never been recounted until now. The short but intense life of ASA began with its establishment in 1962 and is told through the few models it produced (including the coupé and roadster bodied by Bertone, the GTC version and the 1965 411, which appeared two years before the company went out of business), with documents, testimonies of the period’s protagonists as well as rare and unpublished illustrations.

The Land Rover was conceived by the Rover Company back in 1948 as an answer to the famous Willys Jeep, which was used throughout the Second World War. The Land Rover soon became an institution and an ambassadress of the British automotive industry across the world. Almost immediately, the potential of this small and agile multi-use vehicle was recognised and the groups of its users spread to the military, fire services, fuel companies; in practice to anyone who needed to go off-road. It didn’t take long for the success of the Land Rover to develop and diversify into numerous versions, bringing to life an entire family of variants, after which many body builders created even more special series, often single examples. Land Rover was able to save itself from the serious crisis that hit the British motor industry in the ‘70s, evolving through to today with the Range Rover and the Defender family vehicles. There was no way such important vehicles couldn’t be in our series on the “Vehicles that made History” in a book that covers the genesis of the Willys Jeep to the various series that have spelt out the production of this legendary vehicle, including all the military versions and those built overseas.

Today, perhaps, few automobile history lovers know what Cisitalia was. It was an almost ’family-owned’ marque which, immediately after the Second World War, was able to produce masterpieces like the 202 coupé bodied by Pininfarina, as a result of the inspiration and courage of Piero Dusio, a wealthy Piedmont industrialist. And it is a car that has been on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the past. That’s not all, because the small manufacturer also produced a series of racing single-seaters, the agile and fast D46, as they did the Grand Prix, designed by none other than Ferdinand Porsche. The book is written by Nino Balestra, who is also the author of other volumes on the history Cisitalia with the opportunity of covering the entire production of the marque, from 1946 to the mid-60s. Precious archive pictures -some unpublished – complete the work, which closes with the meticulous restoration of a 202 Cabriolet, which has been brought back to its original splendour.

It was in 1919 that Ugo Zagato established Carrozzeria U. Zagato & C., a business that acquired great fame in just a few years among the numerous car manufacturers of the period, first of all Alfa Romeo, which entrusted the Milanese body stylist with designing and building the body of the unforgettable 6C 1750, as it did its 8C 2900 that appeared in the ‘30s. From then on, the famous marque became synonymous with style – not only in Italy – designing a series of masterpieces including the Lancia Aprilia Sport, the various Panoramic cars of the immediate post-war period, the Aston Martin DB4, the Alfa Romeo SZ and TZ, the Lancias Fulvia, Flavia and Flaminia and many more. From the ‘90s Zagato re-emerged as an atelier, designing small production run cars and sometimes one-offs for its wealthy clients. Luciano Greggio, the automobile historian, covers the fascinating story of this prestigious body stylist and has also written other books in the series as well as Zagato. The series, to be published soon, includes books on Touring, Bertone, Pininfarina, Giugiaro, Vignale and Ghia.
