FORMULA 1 2008/2009 ANALISI TECNICA

The 2008 Formula 1 World Championship saw a repeat of the historic duel between Ferrari and McLaren. The Maranello-based team was led by the in-form Felipe Massa with Lewis Hamilton, his closest rival. It was, of course, Hamilton who took the Drivers’ Championship, with Ferrari settling for the Constructors’ title. The Polish driver Robert Kubica also enjoyed a very productive season that saw him score a maiden Formula 1 win for BMW in the Canadian Grand Prix and finish high up the championship table. Mention also has to be made of the very young Sebastian Vettel, the winner at Monza in the Toro Rosso.Once again the expert Giorgio Piola recounts and, above all, illustrates the secrets and technical advances behind these feats in the 2008-2009 edition of Formula 1. Technical Analysis in which he examines the various development phases conducted by the teams during the championship. The chapter devoted to the engines, written by Mauro Forghieri and Mauro Coppini, and those dealing with the regulations, tyres, aerodynamics, cockpits and chassis complete what has become a “classic” of Formula 1 literature. As always, an extensive section devoted to the leading cars of the 2009 season enhances the book.

FIAT 1100

In the history of the automobile, Fiat 1100 is probably one of the few cars that is so closely identified with a cubic capacity. For more than 30 years, if one considers its pre-war production, the “1100” was a symbol of the medium-size Italian family runabout, able to transport four people in complete comfort at extremely low cost. The robustness and reliability of its engine was proverbial, an absolute strong point of the 1100 which was able to withstand numerous motor sport-type conversions. The book covers the history of this unforgettable car from 1953, the year of the debut of the Nuova 1100/103, to the end of the 60s when the 1100 R – as always, available as a saloon or estate car – closed the technical and industrial life of this glorious model. The car’s story is told by the expert Alessandro Sannia and is illustrated with 250 black and white and colour photographs. Technical specifications and the traditional brief guide to restoration complete this latest title in the series.

MOTO GILERA: UN SECOLO DI TECNICA E SPORT

The origins of Gilera in the motorcycle world go back to 1909, 100 years ago, when Giuseppe Gilera established this brand destined to leave a profound mark on motorcycling history, and not only that of Italy. The sports commitment of the company remained a constant in subsequent decades until the Nineties. After a century, Gilera is now writing yet another chapter in its fascinating history in the field of scooters. DESTRA3 LUNGA CHIUDE Quando i rally avevano un’anima

The rallies of yesterday, the ones that spanned 30 years from 1960 to 1990 were not just simple races, but a concentration of adventure. They were excessively long, tortured that took place over of roads with impossible surfaces, the drivers always prepared for the worst. Day and night, searing sun or pouring craven rain, then snow and fog, dust and ice. The drivers had to compete in cars that broke, fitted with tyres unable to withstand the harshness of it all. A perfect contest to generate an incredible story. So here is a collection of various facts, many of which it has been difficult to track down, which could help those who were there at the time to remember, and those who weren’t to get to know. Page after page review an unrepeatable era in which there were not just the winners, but the surrounding companies, defeats born with the same dignity as victories, painful team orders and those who made generous gestures in renouncing a win to help a colleague in difficulty.
Fifty incredible stories that bring out once more recollections the memory cannot cancel. Times when rallies really were rallies. Things that happened that really were over the top, sometimes a good situation because, although they seem like romanticised tales, they were no more than the rule in those days. Carlo Cavicchi competed in just such rallies and wrote about them in the Italian motor sport magazines Autosprint and Rombo. Now, he has reopened his notebook and extracted the best of the best from it. Some stories really do induce dreams, told as they are by Jean-Claude Andruet, Attilio Bettega, Dario Cerrato, Hannu Mikkola, Raffaele Pinto, Tony Fassina, Luciano Trombottto, Maurizio Verini, Mauro Pregliasco, Sergio Barbasio and Amilcare Ballestreri. All rally drivers who really did write the history of their period. And all of them told by a great professional of the sport, Carlo Cavacchi.

The people the author has selected as the stars of this book are:

Rauno Aaltonen, Erik Carlsson, Pentti Airikkala, Markku Alén, Jean-Claude Andruet, Fulvio Bacchelli, Amilcare Ballestrieri, Sergio Barbasio, Attilio Bettega, Miki Biasion, Marc Birley, Tony Carello, Dario Cerrato, Jim Clark, Bernard Darniche, Per Eklund, Tony Fall, Guy Fréquelin, Kyösti Hämäläinen, Paddy Hopkirk, Harry Källström, Simo Lampinen, Bosse Ljungfeldt, Timo Makinen, Shekhar Mehta, Hannu Mikkola, Michèle Mouton, Sandro Munari, Federico Ormezzano, Alcide Paganelli, Raffaele Pinto, Fabrizia Pons, Mauro Pregliasco, Carlos Reutemann, Walter Röhrl, Carlos Sainz, Joginder Singh, Jean-Luc Thérier, Pauli Toivonen, “Tony” (Tony Fassina)

FORMULA 1 & MONZA IMMAGINI DI UNA CORSA/A RACE IN PICTURES

Finally available, “Formula 1 & Monza” is a significant work recounting two realities – the Monza Autodromo and Formula 1 – that have always been inextricably linked by a single celebrated event: the Italian Grand Prix. From back in 1948, when the World Championship had yet to be born, Monza was welcoming cars from the “blue ribbon formula” to the track winding through the Royal Park. This long and fascinating story of drivers and races, of tears and joy, is told in a rich volume presenting through rare and spectacular photos both the racing and the human side that has always been such a feature of the Italian Grand Prix. Featuring in the first part of the book are the over 60 editions of the race while in the second the story is developed with a series of portraits of those drivers whose name has become associated with the history of the Autodromo and those teams that have written unforgettable chapters in the history of motorsport on the Monza track. Adding further depth are chapters on the boundless passion of the Monza crowd – such a major part of the history of this race - the evolution of the circuit, the Autodromo as a film set or a privileged setting for long test sessions or an incomparable stage for the many VIPs who have always populated the paddock and pits. Tracing the history of the one and only authentic “Temple of Speed” is Enrico Mapelli, a Monza journalist and a great expert in the history of the Autodromo past and present. His story is illustrated with around 900 colour and black and white photographs, many previously unpublished and most drawn from the publisher’s own archives (specifically the collections of the photographers Erminio Ferranti, Danilo Recalcati and Franco Villani) or from other professional photographers who gravitated around the circuit.

CISITALIA: UNA STORIA DI CORAGGIO E PASSIONE

Today, perhaps, few automobile history lovers know what Cisitalia was. It was an almost ’family-owned’ marque which, immediately after the Second World War, was able to produce masterpieces like the 202 coupé bodied by Pininfarina, as a result of the inspiration and courage of Piero Dusio, a wealthy Piedmont industrialist. And it is a car that has been on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the past. That’s not all, because the small manufacturer also produced a series of racing single-seaters, the agile and fast D46, as they did the Grand Prix, designed by none other than Ferdinand Porsche. The book is written by Nino Balestra, who is also the author of other volumes on the history Cisitalia with the opportunity of covering the entire production of the marque, from 1946 to the mid-60s. Precious archive pictures -some unpublished – complete the work, which closes with the meticulous restoration of a 202 Cabriolet, which has been brought back to its original splendour.

AUTOBIANCHI PRIMULA e A111

Finally following up on a project he had had in mind from the time of the Topolino, in the autumn of 1964 engineer Dante Giacosa was able to launch the first front wheel drive Fiat. In reality it wasn’t a Fiat at all but an Autobianchi, the satellite marque based at Desio. As well as for its “all up front”, the Primula also stood out due to another courageous and unusual decision: the 3-door body with a hatchback. Unveiled to a rather cool reception from the marketplace, in part for its not exactly competitive price, the Primula declined into a series of almost infinite bodies: 2, 4 and 5 door and a coupé. In the mechanical area, the old engine was derived from the 1100, but that was replaced by a new power unit from the Fiat 124. A year later, the car joined the A111 and then replaced it, with the mechanics of the Primula and a much more conventional, three-volume body. It was a saloon more sought after than the Fiat models of the day, but it left the market in the autumn of 1972. Unpublished colour pictures, detailed technical specifications and a section on restoration tell of the genesis and evolution of these two unique Autobianchis, not expressly conceived and designed as utilities.
