On behalf of the Italian Defense Ministry, Alfa Romeo produced in 1951
a utility van, designed by Giuseppe Busso and based on the Alfa 1900. The vehicle was offered in two different versions: the "Military" AR 51 and the "Civilian" AR 52, but the model was nicknamed Alfa “Matta” (“krazy” in Italian). The book offers a wide range of informations - technical datas and the sporting history of some units (the car also took part to the 1952 Mille Miglia) - as well as a large amount of illustrations which will be absolutely useful for restoring vintage models.
The volume describes the large variety of off road vehicles based on chassis or mechanical parts of Fiat cars, highlights on the Italian productions with a few significant exceptions. Starting with the birth of cars for special uses and the experimentary military vehicles in the early ’900, the book shows in detail the Campagnola and its military versions, the A.R. 51, A.R. 55 and A.R. 59, the off roads 500, 600, 127, 126 and 124 up to the modern 4x4s: from Panda, Tempra S.W. and all the special bodied models, the prototypes and the 4WD Fiat-based concept-cars made in the last 20 years, up to the very recent Simba and Doblò Sandstorm prototypes.
In the past ten years, 4x4s have evolved from somewhat agricultural vehicles used primarily as workhorses, and have carved out their own market niche as mainstream, everyday means of transport. Here is a complete introduction to the world of 4x4s, with practical advice on how to choose the most suitable vehicle, and what to expect when running a 4x4, as well as guidance on off-road driving, towing and maintenance. Essential reading for anyone contemplating ownership of their first 4x4, and for existing owners who want to maximise their enjoyment of 4x4 ownership.
Fifty of the most important - and often groundbreaking - sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are compellingly analysed in individual chronologically arranged profiles, from the earliest Jeeps and Land Rovers to today’s ’crossover’ vehicles such as the Chrysler Pacifica, Volvo XC90 and Porsche Cayenne. This worldwide perspective on the evolution of SUV design underlines the vehicles’ associations with US outdoorsmen, British farming, European beach life and innovation-driven Japanese lifestyles, and shows how each one has shaped the 4x4 off-roaders that we know so well today.
The most popular type of ATV is the sport-utility quad, a machine that is both a fun, capable trail machine and equipped with racks and hitches so it is useful around the house or farm. This book shows how to do the most popular types of modifications to the ATV, most of which consist of bolting on a rack, or other accessory. Also included are some basic maintenance tips and a few performance modifications which include exhaust, suspension, and some drivetrain mods.
Off-road performance, drivability, comfort, appearance and much more are quad’s characteristics. The quad is also becoming a favorite form of racing among the performance and family fun crowd. The book shows and analyzes the different quad models thanks also to technical schedules and photos.
