ALI/WINGS. Progettazione e applicazione su auto da corsa

After the wing plane revolution on racing cars that began in 1966 (1968 in Formula 1) and the appearance of ground effect in 1977, aerodynamics took on a front line role on the track with winged cars, switching from traditional studies of resistance to advancement to the exploitation of negative lift in order to increase speed through the corners.

The Italian rider Max Biaggi, already winner of the 2010 title, triumphed in the 2012 World Superbike Championship aboard the Italian Aprilia. Second and third places in the standings went to Tom Sykes aboard a Kawasaki and to Marco Melandri, in his second year in the SBK series, riding a BMW. Once again, this edition of the Superbike World Championship Official Book is intended as the reference volume for the world of production-derived” racers, the bikes that have for many years now represented the beating heart of motorcycle sport, combining fierce competition with high technology, without neglecting the close ties with road-going machinery. Race by race, the book describes the 2012 season, above all through the spectacular photos taken by Fabrizio Porrozzi, complemented by the ever-pertinent texts of his brother Claudio. As well as reporting on the major championship, the book also features chapters devoted to the other categories (Supersport, Superstock 1000, Superstock 600) completing the packed World Championship programme.

This work has been created for those who want to understand the design process that leads to the definition of a motorbike’s cyclistics and provides a number of applicative considerations. There is a difficulty in moving from the understanding of the theoretical phenomena, both dynamic and kinematic, to the definition of the mechanical characteristics of the components that make the motorcycle. This book contains a series of considerations useful in understanding the essence of a motorbike project, which are supported by layouts verified by the author of a number of individual structural problems. The book also provides information with which to enter into the genesis of the project, starting with the classic plain sheet of paper and ending with test methods. A significant part of the book is devoted to understanding the structural analysis of the chassis.

As with all the years, the book opens with a chapter on the world champion, title conquered in 2013 by Tom Sykes of Kawasaki. Then a chapter is given over to each of the year’s 14 races, giving all the salient facts of every weekend, including the results of each race. But one of the strong points of this annual, one that the enthusiasts will really love, is the chapter on the technology of these gems of motorcycles, which are revealed in their every minimum detail with the help of the technicians that work for the different teams. Spectacular pictures literally lay bare these stars of the world championship, each one of which is described in a detailed technical specification carrying all the key data on the engine and transmission. To complete this official book, there are sections featuring the other championships: Supersport and Superstock 1000 and 600. In not many more than 200 pages, there is absolutely everything an enthusiast could hope to get to know in the precise words of Claudio Porrozzi, a long-established, much respected specialised journalist. And nobody will be able to forget the magnificent images created by his brother Fabrizio, who has been the official photographer of the Superbike World Championship for years.
